What a Horrible Day!
We read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day! We counted all the bad things that happened to him in one day....28 incidents!! We then discussed mental images, which is a movie playing in your mind from the words of the text. Each child drew a mental image from the story and we sequenced them. They followed up by writing in their journals about a connection they have to Alexander and his very bad day.

Problem Solving in Groups
We are learning how to work as a team, learn from each other, and listen to each other as we problem solve. Not only is this math practice, but real world lessons on team work and listening to other's ideas.

What Do You Do With an Idea?
This is another favorite book of mine!
I actually bought it and have had all my daughter's teachers write a note of encouragement inside for her to read.
We read this together and discussed the lessons of the book. The children came up with:
- never give up on your ideas
-your ideas can change the world
- believe in your ideas and don't be afraid
We then met with partners to share ideas that we have that could happen in 2nd grade, help us later in life, or just be a fun idea to try. Once the children each had an idea, they drew it and shared it with each other. Here are a few!
Mathematicians
Today we started our math session by asking the kids what a mathematician is and what one would do. Here are a few of their responses:
-practice math everyday
-find several ways to solve a problem
-believe in yourself
-keep trying
-set goals

Games with dice
We learned another addition game to play today with dice! You can practice math facts at home with your own dice. Have the kiddos roll two or more dice and add the numbers. If you want a challenge, roll two and make it a two digit number, roll both again for the second two digit number, and then add!
Morning Meeting
Each day we start with a morning meeting to build community and review the day's agenda. We learn a lot about each other's lives through our meetings. We greet each other, share about ourselves, play a quick activity, and do word work through the daily message. The kids will learn to lead the entire meeting and take ownership. Today Emma helped run the session!
