Writing a Hook

The kids are writing personal narratives which is a continuation from first grade. We practiced starting off with a strong visual hook to catch the reader's interest. We closed our eyes and imagined what the scene looked like as we began our narratives.

Create your own graph

As we continue our work in analyzing data, the children are becoming more independent in their graphing skills. They worked by themselves to build their own graphs and create questions to go along with the data.

Design Thinking

We started a new design thinking challenge. This project will focus more on inquiry and research for the first several weeks. Our guiding question is: How can we help kids to eat healthier?
Last Friday we explored the thought a bit and many of the kids went home to ask you what you knew about healthy eating. Some of our kiddos even took notes over the weekend and brought them back to share with us.
The class spent some time reflecting on what they already know and understand about healthy eating. They wrote their ideas in their design journals.
After we shared what we knew, we brainstormed what we still need to know in order to complete this challenge. Here are a few questions the kiddos think are pretty important.
These questions, created by your children, will guide our research for the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned!

Graphing with Trix

Today the kiddos were given a handful of cereal and told to graph the colors. They were able to choose how they wanted to create their graphs and we had several different types. This is a review from first grade but the exploration of creating their own graph is a higher level thinking skill.

Happy birthday Paula and Yoya!

Intro to Graphing

The children were posed a problem to gather data, organize the data, and share the data! They were given no directions and came up with very interesting ways to display their findings!

Paper Bag Stories

We read The Paper Bag Princess, a goodie for sure, and then wrote our own stories! The kids created props for their stories out of paper bags. I love seeing their creativity when I don't give them rules. Some kids made princes and princesses, others made dragons, and we even had some purses designed for the characters in the story!

Buddy Reading

This just might be their favorite part of Daily 5! They grab trackers to point to the words, checkmarks to check for understanding, and their favorite books! They can read from the same book or they use two copies of the same book.
